Who We Are
Troop 28 is one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the country and in the Chicago area. Goals of Scouting will tell you more about Boy Scouting.
The Troop has been active since the 1920s. It is sponsored by St. Elisabeth’s Episcopal Church in Glencoe, but is entirely non-denominational.
Troop 28 has many active Scouts ranging from 11 to 17 years of age, from Tenderfoot to Eagle, with a wide variety of interests and talents. Troop 23’s Goals has more information about our objectives.
Scouting is an adventure—sometimes quite an adventure! The stereotype many people have of Scouts is one of saving lives while hiking in the great outdoors. Troop 28 Scouts have done their share of trekking… and not long ago were called on to rescue some hikers who had had an accident in Starved Rock State Park.

Meetings
Troop 28 meets most Monday evenings throughout the school year, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the lower-level meeting room of St. Elisabeth’s Church, 556 Vernon Avenue, Glencoe. The meeting room entrance is on the south side of Hawthorn Avenue, between Vernon and Greenwood Avenues.
Generally, Troop 28 meets most Monday evenings except (a) the Monday following a weekend Troop outing and (b) public holidays.
Most meetings include:

30 minutes of planning for upcoming outings and service projects,
-
40 minutes of work on advancement, and
-
20 minutes of patrol competition and recreation.
The specific agenda varies from week to week, and is planned by the patrol leaders with adult guidance.

How to Join
If you’ve (a) turned 11, (b) completed fifth grade, or (c) earned the Arrow of Light award in Cub Scouting, you can become a Boy Scout. Many of the Scouts in Troop 28 have been members of Pack 28, but others join without having been Cub Scouts or Webelos. Some of our Scouts join from other troops.

To become a Boy Scout, you’ll need to complete an application form to register with the local council and national Scouting organizations. Download the application form here, or send us an e-mail to request an application.
Dues are $50 per calendar year (or a pro-rated lesser amount if you join during the year). Dues cover the Troop’s chartering fee, insurance for outings, troop equipment and maintenance, and each Scout’s individual subscription to Boys’ Life (the national Scouting magazine). Scouts pay modest fees to participate in the monthly outings, covering the cost of camping permits, food and transportation.
